Growing up, Mary Altman always wanted to be an editor. And an astronaut. And a criminal prosecutor. Perhaps even a neurosurgeon if she had the time. As she matured, love of the creative clashed with love of the courtroom and, when she entered college, a decision was forced.
Seeing as New York was so far away both physically and emotionally for a Charleston-born girl, the courts won and Mary went on to receive high honors in a pre-law program. She was accepted into law school immediately after graduation and went on to pursue her dream.
Which is, naturally, when Mary had the revelation that she’d really prefer to work in the creative field after all.
Immediately, Mary screwed up her nerve and took the plunge, moving from the Carolinas to Ohio, where she now works for Ellora’s Cave as a fulltime editor. She edits several award-winning authors in many genres and is currently focused on building the Cerridwen Cotillion—a Traditional Regency line launching this year. To hear her speak now, you’d think Mary had always been certain about her path, knowing from the moment of conception that she was destined to be a fiction editor.
And maybe a neurosurgeon if she had the time.
* I have a weakness for non-traditional settings and exotic locations, especially in historicals. I enjoy shapeshifter stories and magical realism. However, any book that shows the myriad layers of a culture will capture my attention, whether it be a contemporary romantic suspense or a Chinese Dynasty historical.
